Two Pentatonic Approaches On “Inner Urge”

I’ve been studying some interesting pentatonic scales with Tim Price for the last few years and I love how the concept has opened up my playing. Tim has worked out a method (through his studies with Charlie Banacos), which has allowed me to logically apply colours in my improvisation that appeal to my ears.

Here are two examples of the application of these scales on Joe Henderson’s tune, Inner Urge.

The first example is based on the “basic” pentatonics and the second are more colourful to my ears.
